Victorian paisleys...are they handwoven?

I have several Victorian wool paisleys I'm working on today and just want to confirm that these look handwoven, right?

Hmm..its really hard for me to see. The first one i definitely would think so. The third one seems to be skilled, but "irregular" enough if that makes any sense to be as well....

These are so pretty! Not at ALL my area of expertise (if I even have one--LOL!), but I've hand stitched a lot of stuff in my life....

I'd also say yes on the first, but leaning toward no on the latter two (can't see the 2nd very well, and the last looks almost too "perfect" & consistent from what I can see!). FWIW....

I don't think any of them are hand woven, none are unless they are from Kashmir and they usually have pieced edges and are easier to delineate from the European-made ones. All the European made ones were done on early jacquard looms. THe first one almost looks like it might be tapestry embroidered? BUt the ground looks machine woven to me.

Hi Jody,

Paisley's are almost as complicated as lace is to decipher. You are welcome to use my books on the subject for a crash course. Better yet, bring them with you and we'll figure them out! Much easier to tell seeing them in person.
