Vienna

I've just returned from a marvelous week in Vienna and thanks to Karin (Midge) I found lots of places to shop. Sadly, I didn't find anything wonderful but I had a great time looking.
I bought a relatively new Absolut jacket at one shop and some buttons and a brass turtle at the market.
Karin had warned that the market would be disappointing and it was for fashion, but the foods, flowers, and general stuff was fun to see.
I stopped by Flo Vintage near the market on my way back to the hotel. The owner was incredibly rude and the prices were much too high.
All-in-all it was a great trip.

I have always wanted to go to Vienna. It is known as one of the most beautiful countries in the world. A family member used to go quite often.

Claire--this is not about Vienna. However, I wondered if you would comment somewhere about the inspiration for your new Vogue sewing pattern, V8893. In fact, it would be wonderful to have a thread devoted to your patterns. Or does it already exist?

Lynn, let's just say it was inspired by a Chanel pants suit jacket. I was disappointed in the Klimts. I think the best ones are in the US. I have one nice image and some photos of his studio. I'll try to post them before I go to NY on Thurs. They have to be reduced some.

Here are the textile photos from my Facebook page today. These are ecclesiastical pieces--16th c. or earlier. That's where the big money was and also they were not worn out or restyled.

I love Klimt's work. Seeing his paintings was the sole reason we went to Vienna. I remember sitting and staring at "Death and Life" at the Leopold Museum. Seeing it in person was a very moving experience for me.

Oh how very wonderful! My heart aches to visit Vienna, Paris and Prague. Thank you for the photos of the Klimt. I have a small Klimt print in a frame on my desk, (I think it is called "The Lovers" or "The Kiss") I forget it is on the back inside the frame, so....anyway it was an inspiration for my long-time long-distance romance.

Those gilded thread garments are stellar also.

Congratulations on a great trip!

Claire, so great to hear you had a good time in Vienna! I don't know yet when I'll go back again, probably this autumn. My mom has been last week, for an opera performance and she's still totally off her socks, it must have been the performance of all performances.

I've never heard of Flo Vintage before, but will keep it in mind to give it a miss should I ever come by there :). I had a similar experience with a vintag shop here in Zurich's old town some years ago. Sadly, most vintage shops around here are too expensive (and often sell too new stuff - it's just everybody getting on the vintage trend) - secondhands and thrifts are much more fun and better priced.

Your trip sounds lovely Claire, glad you enjoyed yourself. :)

One of these days we'll get to Europe. For now all we want to do is be beach bums; Europe would take effort and egads, we'd actually have to walk!

Just forgot one thing - of course some of the best-known Klimts are now in th US - they used to be in the Belvedere in Vienna (and that's where I saw them some 20 years ago), but Austria had to give them back to the families of the original owners. I admit I never "got" him... my art tastes are a little strange. There are some galleries in the Kunsthistorisches Museum though where I'd be happily locked up :). Flemish & Dutch art of the 16th/17th century (safe for the huge Rubens)... The Liechtenstein collection also has some exquisite paintings from the time, but they've closed this to the public again because apparently they didn't get enough visitors.

I've seen the Treasury too - those ecclesiatical garments are amazing indeed!
