HI

I've had my Great Grandmothers 1950s cocktail dress that she made herself for years. Today I tried it on and it fits. I was so excited! It never fit before now and I've always wanted to wear it.

The only problem I have is that it has stains near the sleeve. I'm guessing from sweat and or deodorant.
I think its made of Chiffon. I could be wrong on that. She passed away a few years ago and I never thought to ask, she gave it to me as a child. Any help on removing them would be great.

Hi Emily,

If you could post pics of your dress, we can help identify the fabric - a lot of '50s cocktail dresses were made of silk chiffon or silk organza, a tricky fabric to get perspiration stains out of but once you know the fabric you can follow the best treatment.

Also, if you could post pics of the stains too that might help.

Here's a picture of the stain. If you need more or better pictures to help determine the fabric let me know.

I can't tell the fabric but I'll guess it's a printed chiffon on an acetate background. Best dry cleaned: do you have a good dry cleaner you could take it to for advice? There are risks with spot cleaning or laundering: the print might run, the fabric might shrink throwing it out of wack with the lining. I think it's perspration, not deodorant but it's quite bad for this sort of dress.

Good luck! I hope your dry cleaner can help.
