Hi, I signed up to this forum hoping I've come to the right place to identify the jacket worn by the character Joe in the film Pride (2014). Here are some pictures I've found, it's the 80's casuals beige jacket - I'd love to know what label it is and it's name if possible.

A badge is pinned to it part way through the movie which can be seen next to the zip at the top - this isn't a feature of the jacket.

Thanks very much!

It looks like a Baracuta jacket (aka Harrington). Its a cardigan windbreaker, popular from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. Having been a young fashion conscious youth in the early 1980s, I have to say it would have been a very nerdy look in 1984 - only old men would have been wearing those then.

Thanks for the id, you're right it's definitely a tan Harrington, that's great. Interesting about it being out of fashion by the 80s, so it was probably unlikely a guy his age in the film would be wearing one...or maybe just someone who is very fashion unconscious? I've definitely seen classic 'football hooligans' wearing them too in old films.

I agree with Jonathan: it was a very uncool thing to wear in the early '80s.

I wore a Harrington in '83-84 but it was a navy one with tartan lining borrowed from my Mod boyfriend: they were imported into Australia by a punk shop and very popular in the British subcultures: but no one wore them in tan. They're great jackets, simple and fairly unstructured, great for warmer months or if you live somewhere it doesn't get very cold.

The style in the film I always associate with middle aged and older men.

Right, interesting; I'm not sure why the costumier chose to stick so many 80s kids in them - maybe down to them being popular in subcultures as you say...or possibly just a few years out!

That doesn't surprise me actually, I have a few friends who have navy Harringtons - and I think you can definitely find them on the high street in the UK - they've come back round I guess. Wearing one in tan is probably making a different statement from wearing on in navy. Either way, as you say I think they're really nice jackets, especially if they're not too thick. Ordered mine - Combat label.

Thanks for all the info.

I suspect it was a new jacket and they used the current trend in fashion for younger guys wearing them rather than attempting to dress period correct to keep the film current, just as we saw plenty of modern dresses and shoes in The Great Gatsby last year, despite it being set in the 1920's.
I have several versions of these from various decades (likely 70's-90's) and like you I still see them for sale on our market today.

I agree with Melanie: I think the decision has more to do with current trends, so that a modern audience can identify with the characters. I haven't seen the film but I guarantee that if they really did dress everyone like it was the early '80s there would be some pretty laughable outfits. Film designers often take liberties like this.

Early 80s for gay men -- I would have expected to see TONS of jeans and sneakers or deck shoes with Hamnett style T-shirts or pastel coloured polo shirts. Blouson jackets in black leather or wool, some vintage high school jackets, but that may have been a North American trend. The only vintage would have been sharkskin trousers and skinny ties with white shirts - New wavey looking.

Ok that makes sense, hadn't really thought about that. Can definitely see lots of modern clothing in period films come to think of it. @Jonathan interesting info, although I'm sure that doesn't go for all of them :). Definitely seeing a lot of those getting popular again. Thanks.

I just saw the movie - its EXCELLENT. Having seen the whole film and the context I think the clothing was spot on - very realistic. The tan jacket worn by that character is a young, sheltered, suburban teen, whose mother probably still buys his clothes. So I think he is supposed to be a bit nerdy. It was a tough film to do the costuming because half of the cast are people in a small welsh village, and the other half are from the London political gay scene, so there are a lot of subtleties to consider in the costuming for the characters and from what I can tell I think the costumer did her homework.
