Vintage Archipelago... (sitering experiment)

I was just messing around with the free services that come with my hosting packages, and cooked up this.

I've got a bit annoyed by site rings in the past, 'cos they seem to be awkward to operate. I'm curious as to whether this actually works OK. So if anyone wants to try this out by 'joining', feel free!!

(I've really marketed it well, haven't I?)

Thanks! I'm glad you all like it! It's a bit of an experiment, as I've never operated one of these before.

I know one of the vintage clothing rings is a bit exacting about where you have your link and next to what - I think we'll make this one fairly flexible, as we're mostly in the process of construction.

What I could recommend, perhaps, is to note your launch 'stage' or whatever in your site blurb on the list - that's always available to edit, and it will give browsers warning about what's coming up. It will also give more of an impression of active sites.

I took delivery of my first Tina Leser sarong dress the other day (it fits! yey!) and I'm in a bit of a Hawaiian mood, can you tell?
Then I thought about us all slowly putting together our sites, and thought 'archipelago!'.

Let me know of any problems/sticky bits anyone comes across trying to register.

p.s. The quote is from Hackluyt's Voyages, one of my favourite ye olde Travel tomes. You can get the abridged Penguin paperback secondhand, still, I think.

(I might be off the radar shortly - job and other shenanigans afoot)

OK, I'm still stumbling around the management interface, but I've managed to add you guys!

Chris, you need to add your code at the bottom of whichever page you want people to bounce onto from the sitering - your interface should have a code editor as well as a wysiwyg one too, right? Love the pooches, btw!

I've checked it out, and I think I can link to more customized button gifs for everyone's little site-ring panel, so as to bring the island theme into the graphics there. That'll require refreshing the code at some point, but it won't happen for a while, and I'll e-mail everyone when it does.

I hate rules, but I think the one provisional one I'll stick to while this is in its infancy, is that sites have to be standalone 'shopfronts', entry pages or independent stores. We all have links to Ebay and the Mall, but the sitering entry page should be independent of those. Just to ensure that the sitering retains some coherence and ebay links and so on don't dissolve the ring's own island-hopping impetus.

But to continue the overblown geological metaphors... I think we're in a kind of volcanic, emerging-out-of-the-sea stage...

So many of my pages and links are still incomplete; I'm really hoping after the next 10 days that I can get down to finishing something that looks coherent and doesn't stop short in too many places...

Anyway, it's fun to experiment!

p.s. Harriet, get something up, then we can include you!

I put the webring box on my links page. I can move it to my first page if you rather. Unless you are talking about a different code.

Oh...i know what happened...i saved it but didn't publish the chage...that's why it is not there!

Okay...now the box is officially at the bottom of my homepage...all fixed :)

p.s. Harriet, get something up, then we can include you!

peer pressure lol

i know i know, working on it! i am so busy (generally just being disorganised and not achieving much but that takes up a lot of time believe me!) that i have employed a web designer to sort the site out as i just can't even think about attempting it myself. i'm so in awe of everyone that does!
anyway he emailed last night and things are progressing.. if a little slowly (when i say i have 'employed' him i use the term rather loosely you understand...he may get bought a pint or two depending how it turns out ;) )

so i will join as soon as i can!! it's excellent by the way - i do like the layout. i'm not always a fan of site rings as i occasionally find them a little confusing (doesn't take much) but this looks very promising! interesting to see how much traffic it generates - keep us posted!

<i>he may get bought a pint or two depending how it turns out </i>

Bargain!! Yes, if you haven't got that much time, it's by far the most efficient thing to employ a designer whose work you like.

I know what you mean about siterings, I've found them confusing and, especially in one of the standard webring communities, just not very attractive at all.

When I saw I could customize this one, I thought it was worth trying. Also, you don't seem to have to sign on with a whole organization to enlist in this one webring (unlike others). I know I can actually *pay* to remove the advertising from this one too, but I haven't investigated the cost, and it wouldn't be economic right now. But something to be aware of, perhaps.

I'm sure I'll find out more things we can do with it as we go along. Let me know any suggestions etc.

Quick update.

I've updated the user code so that it no longer shows that boring 'bravenet webring' button, but shows the enticing Archipelago logo instead. I've also taken out the extra wording putting my name in there - that's not really necessary.

I don't *think* I've screwed it up...

If you'd like the pic version, go back to your sign in and copy and paste. If you think there's something wrong with the pic version, let me know.

If you want the update without the pic, you can copy, paste and delete the last image section where it states 'alt="a bravenet sitering"' - I don't mind!

Cool!

Jamie, your app doesn't seem to have filtered thru the system yet. (?)

Hollis, you're up, but you need to have the site code for your navigation panel entered somewhere on one of your pages to keep the whole 'pass it on' thing going.

It's a bit tricky to find a spot in the Mall format, which is why I was advising having a standalone page of some sort for this - perhaps you can copy and paste the code into the 'about ' page?

The code *should* come up in a window at the bottom of the sitering page when you click on 'edit entry' and enter your password.

It's great to have people join in!:D

I have links on my mall Me page. i put "about and Links" on my about page. If you go to your mall store and right click to copy link to the about page, that could be the url

I re-entered it into the system.
My computer has been on the fritz lately so it might not have gone through like I thought it did. Thanks for letting me know.
