Vintage Burberry Dating

Hi Everyone,

I have recently been given a Burberry Trench Coat by my dad that has sat in his wardrobe untouched for about 20 years and before that in my Grandads wardrobe for God knows how long! It only has a small Yellowing label under the main Burberry Label and no other info. It’s in great condition but can someone here help me identify the year it may be from? It has pass through pockets and I believe it’s pre 80’s but I’m no expert hence why I’m here :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi UncleMonks and welcome to the forums.

I found a few of these online and they seem to date from the '80s and '90s. In which case, you should have a care label. If you can find that (try the side seam) and post pics, it would be helpful. Thank you.

To be honest, I thought yours was likely older too, but seeing all the others online that are similar, with the same labels - plus the modern care labels - I can't help but agree. This style and these labels have been used fairly recently. If I were you, I would look carefully for care labels (they really are so useful in dating) and if you can't find any, look along the seams for traces of their removal.

For what it's worth, the logo lining also suggests that it's fairly modern - I remember when people started to produce logo lining in the '80s and it was so exciting! You do see it in earlier times (I have a few couture '50s skirt suits with it) but I haven't seen it in Burberry coats any earlier than this.
