Vintage compact question

How do you refill such a thing in order to use it?

Has anyone done this or any idea? It originally had loose powder I think.. also need to refill a lipstick holder..

Hi, I have collected vintage compacts for years and I used to just fill with loose powder, but you need to find a little screen to put over top or else the powder will get everywhere. You really can't use it unless you get a screen for it.

Good luck! Julia

Thanks Julia..

I second the suggestion to use a powder screen. If the compact you're planning to refill doesn't have one, it may be tricky to find one that will fit. Loose powder can be a challenge to contain -- if there is a way for it to end up all over the bottom of your handbag it will find a way.

I've actually seen very small vintage scoops designed for refilling a powder compact, but you can probably do as well with a teaspoon.

I collect mostly vintage cosmetics ephemera (mainly commercial cardboard face powder boxes) and some compacts, so I'm very familiar with loose powder spills! I blog about my collection, so if you're interested in seeing pics of some lovely vintage face powder boxes, etc. please vist me http://vintagepowderroom.com/)

Is the lipstick holder also vintage? I'm not sure how you'd go about refilling it. I can visualize using a tiny spatula (like those that sometimes come with face creams) and just sort of cramming it in. Not a very elegant solution -- someone else will likely have a better one.

Even if you don't fill it with powder, enjoy carrying your vintage compact. It's fun just to pull one out and check your lipstick in the mirror.

Best,

Joan

Hi again, To refill the lipstick, couldn't you slice off a new tube of lipstick and warm the bottom with a small flame or something then have the vintage container tube rolled up as far as it will go, push the warmed bottom onto the tube, wind down and put in the freezer a while to set? Ok, I have never done this but I have melted lipsticks in a hot car accidentally and I have scooped out the last bits in a near empty container and put them in other pots. It could be a big mess and it could be a disaster but maybe it could work?

If you do this, let me know how it goes?

Great idea - thanks!

I haven't tried this but have read about it. It could be worth trying? Mix loose powder with a small amount of rubbing alcohol to make a paste, press firmly into a compact and let dry. Apparently the color gets a little pinkish when wet, but goes back to its original color when dry. Not as uniform as a store bought one, but it might do the trick?

This might scare you, but!... :jawdrop:
I've actually cut a new lipstick off and stuffed it into a 30's swivel compact! It was a mess project, but oh so worth it for nights out!
I believe it was meant for a Cody lipstick originally- Long Gone!!(30's kind)
It did my "MAC" lipstick well!! ***Clean out your vintage lip thingy & take your new skinny lipstick, roll it all the way out. place in fridge or freezer for a bit. after stiff, slice at end(measure old holder) and plop int Vintage case. Save the stuff still left in modern lipcase for a lip brush or scoop it into a small cup for future application!
As for the powder: Julia said it!! They may & can be re-made. let e know if you need the ideas on that!
Positive Powder Poppin' Puckers!!!!
