Vintage Dining,,,does it exist in Southern California?

This question is for those of you who live here in Southern California or have lived here.

I want to do something cool for my 35th birthday and would really like to go to a swanky 50's/60's vibe restaurant where I can sit in an old style booth, have great cocktails, dress up and listen to good music, jazz or somthing similar. The ambiance should be nice, not too bright, intimate. Pretty much I want to live an old movie for a night.

I would think that these places would exist here in Southern California, especially in the Hollywood area. Does anyone have a favorite place that evokes that old Hollywood glamour? Does one even exist???:clueless:

Well there is a dinner burger joint kind of place that I know of.. Seen in San Diego but apparently there is one in LA. It has a little more on the menue than just burgers, but it is a Diner type experience. I am racking my brain here... I know there was a place in San Diego that I went to that had that 40s hollywood glam about it. I can not remember anything about it. The servers and such were modern, but the inside had pictures and maps and things from the 30s 40s and 50s in it. Not in a tacky way either but a classy way. I hope I can remeber, but that is in San Diego not LA

Anyhwo, that Dinner is Ruby's

here is a 50s style full scale restraunt

Then there is Musso and Frank Grill.... old hollywood stars eating place. Not sure if you consider that swanky or not, reservations are recommended. The article says siti n booth no 1 because it was charlie chaplins favorite..

Their offical website is under construction, but from internet pictures it has a very 50s look to the inside.

How about the Mupu Grill on Main Street in Santa Paula? It bought most of the original interior fittings from Chasen's restaurant when it closed in the late 90s.

I've heard about this place, but have yet to go:

But the real winner is apparently Cicada Club -- every Sunday night. Here's the details.

We're supposed to go, soon. Apparently everyone (pretty much) dresses 20s through 50s. Dancing, live band. The works. And even the staff & band are very much in character & in vintage. :)

Looks like fun :)

Happy Birthday, Amber -

And Happy Birthday in advance@@@:bday_2::bday_2::bday_2:

Kristine, I just checked out that website and the place looks amazing! I wanna go! Finally, somewhere to go where I'm not the only one in vintage! If only it was closer to me!

Looks like you have lots of great options Amber :P

Wow, everyone thanks! My birthday is not until October, but at dinner the other night with my girlfriends, we got on the topic of age. And everyone was in agreement that I should have some big celebration for my 35th birthday. Honestly I didn't know that this was a milestone birthday, but as I got to thinking about it I realize I never have big celebrations for my birthday and it may be a nice change. So why not.

I am a planner so this is why I am inquiring ahead. I thought something like this would be fun, and I would love to see all my friends dressed up in vintage.

Jennifer~ Thank for your input. Rubys are everywhere down here. It is a sizeable chain. Good milkshakes. I'd previously checked into Musso and Frank and Del Rey. I was turned off by some of the Yelp reviews on the Del Rey, in that they had loud Christina Agulera (Spelling?) Playing. That ruins it for me right there. Musso and Franks looked decent but still not quite what I'm looking for, but will definitely make it a point to check out the bar there sometime.

Jonathan~ Mupu Grill sounds kinda neat. A little casual for what I am looking for, but will have to check it out anyway sometime.

Joules~ Magic Lamp Inn looks awesomee! It is going on my list as a place to eat!

Kristine~ I knew you would have the goods! Cicada Club is exactly what I've been searching for! Is it only open on Sundays? Let me know how you like it after you go. After multiple hours online seaching I didn't even come across it! Thanks so much! This should shift my non-dancing husband into high gear to take a few lessons, LOL!

I actually used to work at the cruise terminal and have stayed on the Queen Mary too just for fun, so I know the observation bar well; it's gorgeous! We've eaten at Sir Winstons and it was good, but I HATED how the waitstaff hovers.

Patent Leather Shoes~ Thanks for the info, I will check it out!

Amber - I'll definitely let you know. We've been talking about going for a while - a big plus is that it's an all ages venue, so kiddo (12) can go. She LOVES to dress up in her vintage and if there's dancing - bonus!

Also - we've just met a nice vintage couple (regulars from the shop) who we've been hanging out a lot with and they go at least once or twice per month - they're threatening to drag us along ASAP... soooooo hopefully I'll have a report soon.

However they already LOVE the place - and so does everyone else I've talked to who's been there... so even if we don't' report back by then, I've heard plenty of positive reviews already to confidently recommend the joint ;)
