Vintage Dress with Universal Studios Tag

Hey everyone!

I just found this lovely little dress that appears to be from a Universal Studios set. It has the barcode sticker inside and a tag pinned to the outside that says "side and waist let hers 4 inches out." I called Universal today to see if there was some way to track what set it came from and they flat out said no. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck finding out where items like this came from.

When studio acquires a garment (doesn't matter the age or type) it automatically puts that kind of tag in it. This is so they can track it for a number of reasons... they want to see where it's been used previously on a film so they don't use it again OR can use it again; they have an inventory of all, in this case, floral house dresses in a medium size, so they can grab 'em fast for the various design meetings; and on and on.

Studios will donate these items to local thrift stores after a show's closed. Here in NM we see a TON of these items around town between filmings of seasons of, for example, Breaking Bad.

The studio will not offer any info about a piece of apparel as far as I know. As someone who's worked in the business there's just not the time and resource. Likely this piece was in the arsenal of purple floral dresses for a project... likely it wasn't worn (because they keep a LOT on hand that's there as possibly needed)... but if it were worn, it was probably not by a star. Those things are quite often sold on line in other venues not donated.

Oh, if the show was big enough, it might be something acquired for extra wardrobe but that's usually either for a big show (budget) or bigger market (budget!). Smaller shows and smaller markets will have extras bring their own wardrobe if you can believe it. UNLESS they are someone who gets a lot of screen time.

So if you got this in a thrift store in your area, what films/shows were being filmed in the last year? Might be from one of them!

Thanks for the info! I found this at a thrift store in Brooklyn where about a million things are filmed so there's really no way of telling where it came from. Oh well, doesn't hurt to investigate I guess!

That's hard to research. NYC has a bazillion shows being filmed there monthly. The film office might be able to help?

Not sure it matters though, does it? It's a cute dress.

There used to be a list of films being filmed in NYC for actors... they used to sell a bound copy of it in high end magazine stores but this would've been filmed.

Guess it's a mystery!

Although it may not necessarily matter (it would if a celebrity wore it), I would be dying to know who wore it. It would drive me a little crazy.

It was probably worn by an extra. Clothing that celebrities wear don't hit the thrift stores usually.

Joules has been a glamorous extra and I've been the schlub who has to deal with the stuff after a show's closed down. lol
