Hi, I'm new to the site and to vintage and I need some advice. I really like the looks of the 30s, 40s, and early 50s, and I'd like some advice on what clothes, accessories, shoes, makeup, and hair were worn in these time periods. I especially like the flared dresses of the 40s and early 50s. I want to create an entire wardrobe and I really could use the advice. Thanks for reading.

you may also want to join thefedoralounge.com, a great community board that discusses at length the styles of 20s to early 50s....the girls there really know how to dress and there are many threads about how to put together outfits, source vintage, make-up, hair and lifestyle.

I love watching old movies... when I was younger I would just go with a theme outfit. Audrey Hepburn to go to the Library, Ava Gardner for a night out.. It gave me inspiration AND I was making it my own

Well, I don't know about newtovintage, but I'm awfully pleased with those links. Thanks!

as I lost all of mine when my old pc crashed.

I LOVE old movies. Their practically all I watch, in fact that's why I want to create an entire wardrobe of vintage clothing. Any suggestions on how I could do that? And what movies in your experience have the best examples of 30s-50s clothing? Thanks again for your help.

I thought Atonement had a wonderful example of the sleek dresses they had in the 30s- that green dress is beautiful...
War films have great examples of 40s clothing- probably easier to adapt to todays clothes as they were rather basic...there's one with rachael weiss but I can't remember the name...
films with ava gardner, marilyn monroe, joan crawford, katherine hepburn, audrey hepburn....they all have pretty incredible costume design...

don't forget Jean Harlow! And Carole Lombard - oh, the beautiful gowns they wore.

More recently, I've been loving the series of Hercule Poirots - the eye candy. My favourite so far is probably "The Body in the Library" set in the early 50s. Lordy, to live a life like that...without the murders, of course.
