Vintage Hats: the stitched "X" goes in the front or the back?

Hello,
I've got a few vintage hats that have me flummoxed as to position on the head but I feel sure the stitched "X" tells me which way it should go. Would you be able to confirm?

In most hats, usually found in those made by high end and couture milliners, the "X" indicates the front of the hat.
