Vintage Lilli Diamond Fringey Dress...

I first thought this was a costume, but it has a Lilli Diamond Label . Here's the pic. Any ideas as to date? I'm saying 60s.

Gawd, I love this!

...don't know about date. I'm having trouble determining length and wonder about its zipper (though I'm imagining it's metal). I get an early-60s 'vibe' from it.

It's so fantastic-al! I've had a couple of fringed dresses like this--without notable labels--and only in black--that have done really well, just including the keyword "flapper" in the title, along with the appropriate era. The first went for a very fast $75 Buy It Now. The second went for well over $100.

I'm pretty sure this is 60ish. From the material, label, and metal zip, I don't see it as being 70s. It's a tad long for late 60's though..unless it was for a tall person. Thanks for the help. Maybe there's $$$ in my future!

Yep, 60s and you got a winner!!

Let's twist again like we did last summer...:D

I think it's late 50s/early 60s - didn't Marilyn wear something like it in.... maybe Bus Stop.

Come to think of it, I think Marilyn did wear something like this in Bus Stop. That may explain why this, I think, predates the 1964-65 era. Actually, the first twist and gogo thing was early 60's anyway..so that makes sense and Bus Stop was late 50's.
I just wish this wasn't golfway green !!!!!
Thanks,
joey

The colour is *very* mid sixties, and I'd say it's 1964 as I've got a book issued at the end of that year which mentions how finged dresses came back into fashion when the Twist took hold and were really popular with teenagers in that year.

Dancer Candy Johnson (the world's official fastest twister... how they know that I have no idea) popularised them when she wore fringed dresses in the film Muscle Beach Party which came out in 1964, and I remember her wearing a *very* similar dress to this one (which was also turquoise) in the closing credits of the film. I have a link to a site about her where there's some pictures of her in the dress incase that might help you:

I can't remember Marilyn wearing a fully fringed dress, but she did wear finge on a lot of outfits. There was a costume in Bus Stop which had fringe around the chest and thigh, a very famous costume in Some Like It Hot which has long fringe which started at the thigh and went down to about knee-level, and a few other costumes in Some Like It Hot which were a mixture of fringe, beads and sequins... but in that whole film she was meant to have the 20s/30s look I guess. Sorry, I'm totally mad on Marilyn! :-)

love, moons and starrs,

Wow, thanks for the information. I'll check the link. My first guess was mid 60's too since I remember the twist movies etc. Alas, with old age, my memory gets fuzzy (or maybe it was those post 1965 years that blurred my memory:D)
Thank goodness that this dress is so tiny...otherwise I would definately keep it!

Thanks for clearing up the Marilyn thing... I knew she had fringe on at some point... but this style came & went so many times. Would the length be a good determining factor? It's definately roaring 20s retro
-- Now I know, it wasn't Marilyn - it was Janet Leigh in "Bye, Bye Birdie!" (1963) Remember the shriners number -- Isn't she wearing a dress similar to this one when she dances on the table, etc?? (I'm just thinking out loud here... double check, it's been a long night!) But perhaps 1963 will turn out to be the magic number.

I always think of Dorothy Provine on "The Roaring Twenties"and that must have been about 1962 (gad, I'm dating myself). DH and I have a disagreement whether the show was the "Roaring Twenties" or the "Untouchables" or both. Either way, we remember it as being early to mid 60s'
The dress is a little long for later sixties. OY, what a dilemna. LOL. I'm thinking out loud too:D)
