Vintage Luggage-pics added

I was at the second day of an estate sale on Sunday and scored on a gorgeous vintage Hartmann train case.

I saw the name on it and snatched that puppy up so fast my head was spinning.

Does anyone know of any resources to figure out the age of it?

It's kind of a lime green, and leather of course.

Has a couple issues, but it's Hartmann and they are indestructible, and will clean up nicely.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hartmann was first in use in 1943 and trademarked 1949. Does it have the copyright symbol? It would help if you could post a picture of the case and a shot of the label.

I think it's '60's, maybe late '50's. Just a "feeling" based on the color and the fact that it's a train case. I think those pretty much disappeared a bit later. I was given a set of Hartmann luggage when I graduated from high school to take to college. It was sturdy and heavy -too heavy for modern air travel, but it already had a "carry on" bag. Here I am getting off an airplane carrying it in 1964.

Some of you will remember that we "dressed" to fly! I'm wearing a light blue 3-piece Kimberly Knit suit. (Wish I still had it!!!)

The luggage was not indestructible. The moisture in Hawaii got to it, but maybe it was how I stored it. I used it for close to 20 years so that's pretty good! Mine was blue tweed fabric, and had my initials on it on an oval cartouche. Did a little looking on eBay and 310132345768 is pretty similar to yours. They do not give a date but the color looks like the same era to me. There's an ad for 1952 Hartmann and yours is newer.

I use Hartmann luggage now and it is absolutely filthy courtesy of United Airlines. Mine is in this coloring: 250399296954

Thanks everyone!

Mine is identical to the blue one on ebay, Linn...

I called Hartmann today they told me 70's due to the color.

The nice thing about the company is that it can be sent to them and they will refurbish it. This one is in pretty good shape, except for the straps over the locks. The inside is close to pristine, and still has the 'snap on' pouch.

Hartmann is such high class luggage...made very very well...not your usual Samsonite.

It was the type of luggage a young socialite would take on her graduation tour of Europe...then take to her first year at Radcliffe...trunk and all!

Or...Elizabeth Taylor would carry her jewels in cases made by Hartmann...the locks are really high end.

I wonder if I send them mine if they will clean it - LOL. I bought 3 pieces about two years ago at Macy's and both pieces that have been checked are truly disgusting and really difficult to clean. The carry-on is still pristine - LOL. The main thing I like about it, in addition to the way it packs is since it's khaki colored I can spot it coming off the carousel- and you are right, it is very nicely made.

I'm surprised that train cases were still being offered in the '70's, but glad that you were able to find out the date - and that you are able to have it restored. Way to go!

Very interesting thread... Your picture coming off the airplane is wonderful, Linn--thanks so much for sharing it (and reminding us of the whole different mindset flying used to be approached with...)!

Hilarious that your traincase could be dated by its avocado color (much more subtle in shade than the one used on shag rugs and fridges, of course!) Very spiffy bag (I had a Samsonite train case in the early 80s, and boy it was a classless clunker in comparison...
