Vintage mens hat

I have come across a Penneys Marathon felt hat that should date back to the 1940's I believe. The hat style is Rancher and it is marked aas One Hundred Beaver. It also says made especially for and the name of the owner on the inside hat band.

I can't find much about this particular hat. I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with it and what the value of the hat may be. It's in fair condition, shows some wear but nothing major.

Would you be able to attach photos of the hat and its label? It's hard to pinpoint a date without seeing it.

Your best bet for pricing is to research like hats to find asking and/or sold prices.

I will get some photos for you and get them uploaded. I'm guessing at the era.. the hat was owned by a gentleman my Dad worked for back in the early to mid 50's so it could be 50's era as well.

Well, this is what I could come up with for photos. As you can see, it's a western style hat, not a standard fedora. If anyone has any insight I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Mary Jane. I know that the gentleman for who it was made lived in North Dakota. Not finding anything by searching his name. As I said, I'm guessing at the era so just looking for any input at all. It certainly could be 50's or 60's for that matter. I would like to sell it at some point but valuing seems challenging. If it is truly a 100x beaver that seems to be something special above and beyond the age. Any suggestions there would be appreciated as well.

Hi,

That is a nice hat. I am just giving a guess...it looks 1960's to me, maybe 1950's, but not at all 1940s. The beaver refers to the type of fur felt used to make the hat. Usually beaver is marked 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X to indicate the level of quality or amount of beaver fur used. Often the number or name/number stamped inside a hat was actually the price put there by the maker, not the seller (as in a Dobbs "25", should be sold for $25.00 etc). So, the number 100 could be the suggested retail price. But I am not sure. You could try the Fedora Lounge website, they have a lot of great hat folks there who are quite helpful.

I agree with the others: not as old as '40s - I think it's no earlier than the '60s. Value will depend to a great deal on the size, as many beautiful vintage hats are small by modern sizes and hence, harder to find wearers/buyers for. I've sold some wonderful hats very cheaply simply for that reason. Such a pity but our heads have gotten much larger in the last few decades.
