Two Vintage Cowichan Indian Wool Sweaters, 1960 or 1961. From Cowichan region, Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. (Pictured below)

This pair of sweaters may be out of the league of this forum, being that they are Canadian vintage? Hopefully someone will be able to help me in my quest, and any help would be most appreciated.

I've done quite a bit of research on Cowichan sweaters in the past couple of days... but still haven't found good examples of VINTAGE sweaters and their value range.

What I do know is that NEW Cowichan sweaters are around $150-$250 depending on their complexity. Any ideas on vintage value?

I have an auction page designed and ready to go (on one of my sites), with lots of photos and more information-- if anyone wants to see that (if allowed) I can post it here. I will probably give it a go on eBay if I can't sell them by other means, but would like to give the Vintage connoisseurs here a crack at them.

Thanks for the info Marie! I had not come across that link and it was very informative!

I know for a fact these are both Cowichan because my grandpa had them customized by the Indians for him and his wife on their trip to Vancouver Island. The sweaters have all the famed features they are known for; the only thing is, there are no tags. Hmmm...

Hi Jim,

I have sold quite a number of these on eBay in the last 9 years. Generally speaking they sell well when the motif is particularly interesting and color selection is unusual.

The 1st one with the horse motif is actually a lot more interesting than the 2nd one shown.

The ones I had done particularly well with were motifs of dancers, hockey, bowling, antique cars...that sort of thing.

Prices really have varied with these. At one point a number of years back they were pretty hot with Japanese buyers, but I am pretty sure that market has wained considerably where these are concerned.
