Vintage Red Dress - 50\'s?

This dress has me confused. It has a large full skirt, 2 pockets on the front of the skirt, shoulder pads, and buttons down the front with a side zipper. Except the zipper is not metal....
Also, the hems are finished with a lace type material.
I posted pics, let me know what you think.
Any help would be much appreciated.

What is the fabric? Can't see the buttons very well, are they plastic? Looks later 80s to me. Home made right? There was a lot of interest in the 50s look at that time except with big shoulders. Thats my guess.
