Vintage Research Resource

Good lord. I've been wandering around in the most fascintating online labyrinth for the last hour! First I went to the Museum of Online Museums and found the blog for the Smithsonian and was lost in there and discovered the installations of Jean Shin (including one made of cut-up cast-off shoes and another of single socks abandoned at laundromats), and when I finally came up for air I started looking at the old Christmas catalogs and after the first one loaded I realized I had to make a break for it or I'd be like Charlie in that old Kingston Trio song, who "may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston" on the old MTA and never return!

Thanks for the *great* links!

OK, I gave in and started browsing through the 1940 Sears catalog. And I found an odd phrase I've not seen before and wonder if any of you have. It's from this ad for Fuzzy-Wuzzys (heh):

I noticed that they called the fuzzy treatment "electrified shearling." Anybody ever heard of that?

This really is an amazing resource. Every single page of the 1940 Sears Christmas catalog -- and that's just one of countless vintage Christmas catalogs they have on the site. And it's great the way you can scroll horizontally to see all the pages as thumbnails across the bottom of the page. A really helpful layout decision.

I just quick cruised through the 83 wish book, which I'm sure I would have perused heavily in its original form. I found the Glo-Worm! :hysterical:

Fantastic Escapism

Nostalgia. I really enjoyed the thrift shop art. Call me weird. The catalogs take me on a good head trip. Thank you for the links. It's cold and nasty in the desert today, so I will be busy online in my little time machine.
