for any of you in the u.k., you might have seen 'British Style Genius' on BBC2 last night. If not, heres a clip-> http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00dyf58
IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE THE UK, CATCH THE HIGHLIGHTS HERE; http://www.fashionologie.com/2330477

Very interesting as it starred Barbara Hulanicki, Twiggy.....

It also showed Kate Moss "designing" her range for tiopshop- including finding vintage items and replicating them EXACTLY for topshop......
I hate how some people now actually think im refering to the vintage style, rather than true vintage when i use the word vintage....when i explain the difference they say- "isnt that just secondhand?"
GRRR....:teeth:

I need a new TV after hurling things at it. Firstly because Mary Quant was on it and they were taking such a broad view of the era that they spouted the usual nonsense about how she invented things and initiated things. In fact Twiggy said it later on when talking to barbara hulanicki that BIBA were in fact the first true high street shop with affordable clothes. The idea that Quant was selling affordable clothes is hilarious, most average women couldn't afford them. I did laugh when the usual stuff about how she was the first to use PVC and how she changed the world was a voiceover over footage of Twiggy and other models running around in what I'm fairly sure were John Bates' PVC dresses (which, whether first or not, were a lot nicer than Quant's PVC pieces).

Then that awful Topshop woman saying that while they can't wholesale copy modern designers, they can 'plunder' vintage to their hearts content and then she laughed the most smug laugh I've heard. That gorgeous cape they duplicated....I'm afraid I turned into a potty mouth.

But they did soothe my nerves with all that gorgeous Ossie footage (including a couple of dresses I've got!). My watchers on an Ossie I've got listed had gone up by nearly 25 the minute that programme ended. My website stats show about 100 more hits than my average daily tally, and the ebay Ossie now has 80 watchers as opposed to the 42 I had before the programme was on!!

So perhaps it's done some good in bringing new people to the genius of Ossie, and also in showing how money-grabbing and tacky the fashion industry is. Honestly, there are lots of paid designers at Topshop. What the hell are they designing?? They're stealing, not innovating.

Can't watch the video outside of the UK...
(I love how the internet was supposed to be a free information source for everyone and anyone but now suppliers can cut off regions from viewing things for political, advertising, or whatever reason)

Here's how Kate Moss does it, according to an article in the August issue of Vogue:

"...Kate heads to her office on the fourth floor, where two young female designers are waiting. The room is bulging with vintage finds - thirties satin cocktail dresses, hippie-ish printed blouses, rock-'n-roll T-shirts. Amelia, one of the designers, shows Kate a black and net dress that is the inspiration for the party dresses..."

Apparently what she does is shake her head, yes or no.

Plunder? PLUNDER? So being too lazy to be creative and re-making someone else's unique design is okay? Ranks right up there with the 80's "Flapper" dress represented as 20's - oh please!

The reason BBC content isn't available abroad is because you aren't license fee payers, and the content is being made for the people who fork out £139.50 every year just to be allowed to own a TV in this country. In a commercial sense it also is important for sales abroad. They'd never be able to sell Doctor Who, for instance, to other countries if people were already merrily watching it just after it aired here!

Of course there's nothing to stop those in the UK with no TV, and thus no license fee to pay, watching BBC content online....but I'm sure they'll find a way eventually! :bat:
