Vintage St. John

I know current St. John is very desirable, but what about the vintage items? I have a great, black santana knit dress from the 70s that I think is cute, but what is the market? I'd be putting it in my Babylon Mall store, not eBay, so please stop me if you think I'd be wasting my time!

No pictures, not until I think it's worth the effort!

I think I remember from our St. John experts that just like some Lilly Pulitzer buyers (some, not all), emphasis the St. John aspect versus the vintage aspect. Other than that, I would wait til the St. John experts emerge. I know folks search for the santana knits but have no clue on price or what is collected, etc.

(so really, this is just a "bumping up the thread" in disguise)

If it's a classic style and not overbearingly 70s or 80s in style, it can do very well. St. John buyers do not like to be told the item is vintage. They buy by style, not age. They don't really seem to care if it's older, but don't emphasize that aspect.

Santana knit is what they love. It's really just a stockinette stitch made of a wool/rayon blend. The more bling bling the better. They love shiny buttons and brooches, paillettes, studs, and stones. And they really love it when the SJ logo is prominently displayed. Good luck with it.

I have a Castleberry knit pink dress and jacket and I just did some research on Ebay. The highest going off recently was $152.00 on a St. John Santana knit. Next in line was $49.00.

Now I know what a santana knit is. Thanks, Ellen.

Anyone want a really good laugh? from all the santana (as in carlos) licensed fashion items...i thought for some strange reason there was some way back in the day loose link. I told you that you would laugh :)

I've wondered the same Lizzie. I have a vintage 70s St. John ivory
dress. Unfortunately it is not a Santana knit, it looks more like a boucle.

I'm the same as you, I periodically look at it and think, should I take
pics? Is it worth the effort?

Sue

Boucle is good too. It is probably made of the wool/rayon blend and it will sell. That's what great about St. John, they sell if the price is right. Some things will never sell no matter what.
