Vintage Sue Brett - 50\'s party jackie O dress ?

Hello All - Excuse my recent absence from participation in the chat forum. I won't let it happen again :-)

I have this GREAT vintage dress which I'd like to describe for you in the hopes I can receive some suggestions/help on dating and description for eBay.

Oh - I opened my eBay store, The Unlikely Spot --> you can get there through www.TheUnlikelySpot.com. I do sell a combination of new and vintage clothing, shoes, and accesories.

well...back to the subject at hand. I searched the label directory and was surprised to see that the "Sue Brett" label wasn't described (unless I somehow missed it). This is a "Sue Brett Juniors Dress" dress. Very excellent vintage condition - it reminds me of a dress I had for my Barbie when I was a kid. check out the photos - it has a cowl (?) type collar which zips all the way up from the back and then turns over (reminds me of the jackie O styles). original belt is included (sorry it's too small to fit my mannequin) and the skirt is a full pleated skirt (I have NO idea how to describe the type of pleating---any help ?).

it is a slick type of fabric - i don't know what it might be

so...any help/suggestions/constructive criticism on date, fabric type, style description, etc. would be VERY much appreciated.

thanks !! connie

Hi Connie
I think that may be a portrait collar, and knife pleating in the skirt.

It's probably a mid 60s dress, maybe an acrylic or acetate? Do a burn test of a small snippet from the seam allowance and compare to this chart

Hi Connie! Cute dress! Those pleats are called "box pleats." And I think your dress is probably early to mid 60's rather than 50s. Not sure if the collar is exactly what is commonly thought of as a cowl--I think cowl necklines are more drapey, but maybe this is a cowl, too. My sewing books don't show this specific neckline.

I think the Sue Brett label was discussed just a few weeks ago here. If I remember correctly, this was a store-brand label--Montgomery Wards? Sears? I can't remember, and I always get this label confused with the Miss Brent & Carol Brent ones, which I think were Monkey Wards.

Is the fabric very airy & lightweight? Could it be what was called "whipped cream"? I have a couple of dresses right around the same age as that one, both in floral prints, and they're the whipped cream. I think it was a polyester fabric.

HTH!

Maybe it's a box pleat...am I not seeing it correctly? Knife pleats fold over, like when you'd make a fan in grade school out of notebook paper. Box pleats have a flat face with a fold back on each side (hard to describe).
