Vintage Sweater Question

No tags on this sweater - I assume it's a band sweater and that's another note below the 'P'? The deep ribbing = 30's 40's? later? The turtleneck makes me think it might be a bit later... and a woman's sweater?

The wider, chunky wale of the ribbing (say that 10 times fast) is generally a late 60's (but mostly a 70's-80's) thing. Don't get too hung up on the wide waistband~ it's the width of the ribs that help better date it. Older sweaters (30's- 40's) have very fine, very narrow ribs.

I'm not sure I explained that well at all. It makes sense in my head, though!

Agree on the size of the ribs, but what I really want to know is what is it made of? Pure wool or acrylic? Any synthetic component is going to put it in the '60s-70s camp, but as for me, I think the style looks late '70s.

Can you tell if it's machine made or a hand knit? That will help too. Also - what are the letters made of? Are they that iron-on vylene stuff we use nowadays or something older?

Yeah, I'd try and do a burn test to see if it is wool. If it were to be acrylic, you would know it is newer. Something about the letters just looks newer, though.

BUT, I've seen very early pictures of women wearing turtlenecks - as early as the 1910s. And this thick Shaker type knit was very popular in the 1920s.
