WAAY OT....Anyone Familiar w/ Cat Allergies?

My Mom has a cat, Sophie, an older cat....teeny sweet little all black female. For the last few years she has been sneezing big funky globs o' snot (gross, sorry) and the vet has not been able to get it cleared up w/ antibiotics, though can't find anything "wrong". Clearly its an allergy she has developed with age.

Any ideas on what can cause that? I'm looking into maybe gluten as most cat foods are made with it, but have to find the right food to get to my Mom to try with the cat. Meanwhile I was hoping maybe someone had dealt with something similar. I feel awful for Sophie and my Mom, its messy and its gotten to where no one wants to even be near the cat for fear of being snot goblin'ed.

Any help would be welcome, thanks!

Mmmm, not too sure about cats, but in humans an allergy to gluten (which I have) causes problems at the other end. Snot, phlem problems could be dairy related.

A human with not much experience with felines.

Big help aren't I?

That is the reason we named one of our cats Wheezer. As a tiny kitten she caught a respiratory something and was literally on her way to be euthanized when a friend rescued her at the last second. We agreed to take her for the weekend and she never left. The vet told me that when a cat gets a respiratory infection before they are vaccinated they pretty much have respiratory problems throughout their life.

Obviously your mom's cat is older but perhaps this is of similar origins and as defenses weaken with age it manifests itself. We really don't do anything for Wheezer's condition and it comes and goes.

Also, one of our cats was vomiting quite a bit and the vet suggested eliminating fish from her diet as many cats are apparently allergic to seafood (who knew?). Perhaps you can try that first, although I think a food allergy is more likely to manifest itself in G.I. problems.

Good luck and how nice that your mom's cat has a loving home as she slips into old age.

Have you considered taking her to a different vet for a 2nd opinion? I think I would.

It really doesn't sound like a food allergy. Maybe it was caused by an enviromental change? Did your mom move or paint or...?

I remember when I had to bleach that bathroom in that house here some years ago. I truly think that's what eventually killed my Mr. Nibbs...

Same house for years. I will ask my Mom about any changes she's made in food, and what litter she's using (dust can cause this I think).

Maybe next time I'm up I'll try another vet, its a small town, only a couple.

I just want to help as best I can from afar....

Thanks guys!

That cat sounds like me. Used to be me. I am not on Gluten Free low dairy diet.

Results were not imediate but there was improvement. I lost 20 pounds and sound less nasally.... I always sounded like I had a cold.

God know what is in the cat food we buy.... I would try some organic brands.

My cat has had some bad allergy problems over the years. Recently we put him on an all can food diet (to deal with constipation - poor guy). Lo and behold, his allergies have almost totally gone away. His coat looks shinier, no dandruff and he's lost weight!

I generally feed Max Nutro or Science Diet canned food. They also don't get fish flavored food as I prefer not to have stinky kitty breath.

my cat has a runny nose constantly, if he really loves you, he likes to head-butt and wipe. ewwww. He can't smell a damned thing, wouldn't survive if he had to hunt for food, if you put down a treat, you have to point to it, he won't smell it.
He needs kitty Zyrtek!
