Wallis stores history and vintage advertisements ...

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone could help me on this one. My mother works for a ladies clothing store called Wallis here in the UK and they are entered in a competition for store of the year and have decided to do a vintage theme. The manager has got her hands on some vintage Wallis from the 70's and 80's and all the staff are wearing the current season's clothing in the style of a certain era (complete with vintage accessories!) on the day of the visit. Anyway they have asked me for help and I got to wondering if anyone knows anything about the history of Wallis stores. I have done an internet search, but nothing has really come up. Also I was wondering if anyone has perhaps come across vintage advertisements for Wallis which would be just fantastic if we could get them. Any help at all is much appreciated.

Maybe Liz or Senti will come along and help, as I know no more I'm afraid.

Sounds like a fun project! I would have thought they must have some of the stuff you're after such as adverts at the head office or record dept.? Now that would be interesting, if you could get someone there to help you out.. as it is for their benefit!

Ahh it seems head office won't help because it is for a competition, but I am wondering if perhaps I could call up and say it is for a 'school'/'uni' project or something. There are always ways and means!

That sounds like so much fun. Tell your Mom to take pictures so you can post here. I would love to see what they come up with.

I would imagine the adverts would be in a British magazine. I did not find anything on search either.

This is probably not relevant but here is a thread we had here on old department stores.

I found a reference to Wallis stores in CHANEL Couturiere at Work by Amy de la Haye published by V&A. According to this book, Wallis specialised in Chanel copies. "From late 1950s Wallis bought so many toiles that they were offered concessionary prices. " CS

Sadly no, I phoned up and they gave me a bit of a run around and I wasn't able to get anything in time for the competition. They all looked great though and one of the girls who borrowed my crinoline loved it so much she went out and got one of her own.

I am so busy these last few days after rescuing a kitten I found in the middle of the road with a plastic bag sellotaped to her head, but when I get a minute I must post the pics.
