This is probaby verging on an impossibility, but does anyone know where I can find original 19th century (1870-1880) fabric? Silks (probably not available in usable condition by now) or wools would be preferrable. I need at least 12 yards.

Could anyone recommend to me a specialty dealer in Europe?

You may have stumped us with this one.....

The most I ever see, and that is rarely, are remnants and scraps.

Occasionally Whitaker-Augusta Auctions has vintage yardage, but when they have it, it goes very, very high. You can check their website for auction results to get an idea.

Thanks, Hollis. I'm fairly certain I can come across a dealer in London. There are so many textile merchants, so hopefully I'll find what I'm looking for.

I have some I think may be 1800s, but more likley TOC. There are several yards, but probably not 12... It's a floral chintz, not silk or wool, though. I can check it, though, if you like and see if I can get a better idea of date and amount.

I think I have a silk as well, but i'm sure it's not near 12 yards!

Thanks very much, but I think you're a bit too far away for me at the moment. I'm sure they're lovely, though.

Some gorgeous yardage came up on eBay a few months ago in the vintage clothing-->victorian category. It went surprisingly cheap, and I was kicking myself for forgetting to bid.

Oh, I hate it when that happens! I'll just keeping looking. Short of wearing an extant garment (which could be risky), I'd like to make my own out of authentic materials, thread and all.
