Wedding Shoe Problem

Hi Everyone,
I own a pair of 1920's wedding pumps that have been painted with the shoe polish that used to be used to whiten saddle shoes. I wouldn't bother about these except they have a lovely pair of beaded buckles on them. The exterior is probably satin although it is hard to tell with all the whitening that has stiffened the outer shoe. The interior of the shoe is made up of kid. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to restore these shoes? I really appreciate any help. Lorraine

I had a pair of white 1920s shoes that had the same surface. I don't think there is anything you can do because the white is not a wax but rather some kind of paint that had hardened and dried the surface of the leather. You could try a fresh coat of white leather polish or clear wax to see if it will soften them somewhat but I suspect the addition of any wax will make the white surface looked grease stained which it probably why a wax wasn't used originally. I am not even sure if there is such a thing as white shoe leather polish -- you might have to ask shriner!

I've had the same problem, and have never been successful in removing all of it. Sometimes water and detergent will remove some of it, but you do run the risk of stains.
