The little hole that the shank fits in is an eyelet which I'm sure you already knew. There are two advantages of these buttons: 1. Fragile buttons can be removed for cleaning 2. The same set of buttons can be used on more than one outfit. This would allow you to purchase very expensive buttons and use them on multiple jackets. 3. here's another reason--when the garment is discarded there is no obligation to include the buttons.
Last year when I taught the Chanel workshop. One of my Canadian students had stopped at Britex (SF) on her way to Palm Springs. One day she brought her button purchases in, held up a small plastic bag which included buttons for 3 or 4 jackets--cost $500.+. Claire
"The little hole that the shank fits in is an eyelet which I'm sure you already knew." Makes perfect sense.
Do I get points for knowing 1. & 2. ?
That's quite a price for buttons! I actually get quite annoyed when I find more recent vintage without the buttons - it's a trend that continues except that the buttons they remove are not the removable kind.
