What can you tell me about this dress?

I think it's probably home-made. It's lace and tulle over satin, a thin self-belt, with a metal side zipper. There are panels of stiff pleated tulle in front, and a shawl collar.

The bottom hem, arm holes, and bust are finished with bias tape. The intererior seams are unfinished.

Some areas of the pleated tulle have been flattened. I wonder what would happen if I have it drycleaned - I'm sure my local drycleaners doesn't press pleats. Any suggestions?

Another question, would this have been considered a dress for every day wear, or something more formal like for church, or would it have been considered dressy enough for evening wear?

Agreed: I'd put it as early '50s and agree with cocktail frock - it's lovely and someone is going to love wearing that! I think your pleats will be safe with a cleaning - after all, they've lasted over fifty years so far.

Ookoo that is FABulous!!

another vote for early 50s and sweet cocktail dress here. did you get it for a special occasion? or did you just fall in love with it when you found it?!??!!!

Instead of collecting one era, I'm trying to get one example from every style and era. When I find something that fits me, and it's unlike anything I already have, I can't pass it up!
