I wonder if anyone could tell me the date of this photo? This beautiful woman is my grandmother. I am writing a family history. I think the photo is about 1918 but the hairstyle is unusual and looks more 1920 or so. Any thoughts are gratefully received thankyou.

The hairstyle looks fine for 1918. Kind of an Isadora Duncan style. Although I think dress is a little earlier than that, more mid 'Teens era, maybe 1916. Cannot pinpoint it better as she is sitting down. And it may be the dress she wore is older than the date the photo was taken. Lets see what others think.

She is beautiful. And quite stylish with her wristwatch.

I was also thinking 1918, as the dress is a little older, and the hairstyle is rather progressive-artsy! Hard to find picture examples of wearing a forehead hairband in the teens, but I did find writing about it, mainly alluding to a practice to prevent headaches, going back several centuries but being brought back in the early 1900s.

Very interesting. I thought the hairstyle was unusual, I could not find anything quite like it on the internet. It looks to me as if she is holding a fashion magazine. An art nouveau picture on the cover. I wonder if that helps?

For me, it is hard to be 100% accurate as she is sitting down. The dress length is a really good clue as to dating it. I am sticking to my circa 1917-1919 date for her dress. Basing it on the high waist, matching collar and cuffs, and for me a good clue is the round buttons on the high waistband. I tend to think of these larger decorative buttons as more later 'Teens era than 1920s. Not that they did not use buttons in the early 20s, but overall I just get a sense of late 'Teens.

The headband looks fine to me also for circa 1918. She does seem rather artistic and a bit Bohemian. As does the picture on the magazine.

Yes, so late 'Teens to early 20s, I just cannot be 100% sure.

That's fantastic, thankyou. It's so helpful to have even a rough date with the reasoning behind it. I don't know enough about fashion to be accurate.
