what decade do you favour the most vintage wise?

I just wondered. I know that 50's and 70's are the most heavily filled categories on ebay UK, but what category do you hit first if you are shopping online (or in a well organised vintage store!) if you are looking for something to wear yourself (and NOT for resale)?

I know this is all a bit generalised but would be interested to find out the top decade here!

:D

ThisIS hard, because the decade I tend to favor is the one from which my latest find comes! So it's always changing. But, I guess I most consistently look for things from the 20s, so that's my vote. Interesting question!

I clicked off 1950's in the survey... but I'd have checked both 40's AND 50's if I could have.
Decor wise, I'm really drawn to 50's kitsch. And even into the early 60's. Clothing wise I really love the 40's and into the early 50's.
However... the only thing that fits me from either era is purses! LOL!

That is a toughie, Harriet.

As far is what's in my actual closet if i opened it up and told you what is in it - its 50s dresses as that what suits me best, with a healthy dash of 40s (suits, blouse) and 70s (blazers and platforms) thrown in....oh and "90s does 60s" miniskirts and "90s does 40s" pencil skirts. I also have a more than healthy amount of mod accessories as although i adore mod everything, its not a perfect world and i dont have the right body type to really pull it off.

That funny cusp period towards the end of the 60s and beginning of the 70s. I find it the most flattering to my shape, it's feminine, fun, wearable but striking and I like the 30s/40s styling therein - so I do also wear 30s and 40s if I can find them. It's also the only period I collect, designer-wise. I don't know if that's just happy coincidence or one is an offshoot of the other!

I guess that it's interesting that most of the vintage I wear is actually 60s too. I've been a mod girl for a looong time! But most of my 60s things I've found in thrifts. I rarely go looking for 60s stuff, it just seems to find me.

Wow, tough question to answer! I love 40s thru 60s, but 50s is what seems to look the best on me and what I always used to end up buying. And I could throttle myself over some 50s dresses I got rid of when I relocated 300 miles away; should have kept them! Actually, I don't shop much for myself anymore, but when something I bought for resale finds its way into my personal closet, it is usually 50s! I love 60s mod, too, but it doesn't love me now as much as it did when I was 17!

I agree that was a hard choice.

I selected the 50's but I do love things from the 20's also. My choosing of items to wear I must admit depends on my mood at the time!!!
:P

Selected 40s and love the 30s-40s cusp as a period. Things I'm drawn to buy also settle in my favourite film period, which is c. 1939-1953.

But I wear a lot of 60s and early 70s too - easier to find and easy to wear.

Just to demonstrate my indecisiveness and addiction, I'll say that I like to collect certain classes of things from the periods I think did them best:
capri/cigarette pants from mid 50s to early 60s; leisure skirts & separates from the late 40s- mid 50s; Scottish cashmere sweaters from the export explosion of late 40s to mid 60s; neat swingy suits from the late 30s-40s; smart jumper dresses and tailored jackets from the late 60s...

I'm doomed.

aren't we all - lol! i admit i don't just collect one period for myself either, but i hit 40's as it's what i do indeed covet the most, and end of the thirties/ early 40's is still my top of the pops when it comes to dressing up! i'm sure it stems from doing WW2 themed 'songs from the shelters' music hall style production at school when i was about 8 and we were all in costume...

How odd that nobody wants 30s stuff. Some of you said late 30s/early 40s, but nobody entered 30s on the poll. Why is that?

is it because in form, we associate the early part of the 30s with late 20s, and the later part with early 40s fashion? So there's a tendency to gravitate to either end? Or maybe it's something else.
