I really am not sure, but I do know leather can be embossed. Maybe?

I agree some kind of textured leather. I wonder if it's imitating another kind of hide, but I can't place it.

It is an embossed or textured leather called 'boarded' leather. I have virtually the identical shoes, also mid 1950s.
