Last week I took delivery of my first (53") roll of background paper for photography and the collapsible stands to support it. Now what do I use for lights? What is your preferred light, bulbs, wattage, etc. and where did you get your equipment?
I bought professional lights on ebay, the ones with little umbrellas attached, but they aren't birght enough. I may go back to my trusty clip on shop lights with Reveal bulbs.
I do mine in the daytime - I have a sunny window on one side, and one of the "Home Depot" setups on the other side - a fluorescent shoplight with 2 full spectrum daylight bulbs. Some VFGers use the same thing and hang them from hooks in the ceiling - mine hangs from a metal stand MacGyvered by DH with a ridiculously industrial base.
Here it is in a corner of my ebay room, I mean, the guest bedroom...
The room was in its guest function at the time, so the light is shoved into the corner near that window - my gray marinecloth backdrop is next to it, rolled up on its pole. Some close-ups of the base and hanging thingy
The doubledoor closet that I balance the backdrop pole on top of the open doors to take pics is on the right in the first pic. The pole is long enough that when it's up, I have hanging space for stock on either side of the closet, which is very convenient and stabilizes the pole so I can slip in and out of the closet without knocking the backdrop down.
Keep in mind that bounced light, reflected light, is much better than direct light. Less shadows, less hot spots.
I have two 500w halogens attached to the ceiling that bounce onto foam core boards and back to the photo area. I add 4 lower watt lights, 2 more direct but distant lights, and 2 that bounce up from the floor.
I have a permanent set up, so I don't have to move the whole shebang out of the way like some do. I recommend that if you can spare the space.
