What is this called? And era?

This came with a group of older garments - everything from 1900 - 1930s. It's a neck piece - sort of a scarf/dickie with a snap-button. Is it just for a woman? Does it have a name?

Hi,

That is charming. I have the same muffler, in blue, still in its original box. They were very popular for stocking stuffers and small Christmas gifts in the early 20th century. Mine dates to about 1905 to 1910. Lynne (spelling?) found it with her great detective work once again!

How funny, VFG members have a regular repository for these mufflers. The ad says they "... are infinitely better than neck scarves." It appears they were for men only. I agree with Jonathan -like those mock turtleneck dickies. Thanks everyone.

It's interesting to see how long ago this was invented, this is how I wear my short fleece scarf now! With the retro styles in fashion now I have seen quite a lot of young guys wearing short scarves in this manner now too. Maybe time for a revival? :)

The box mine came in has a pretty woman on the cover with a hat and veil - I thought they were for a woman, especially as the neck seems small.

Very interesting thread... and as Amanda says, how funny that so many VFGers have this item! (I personally don't, and will be keeping an eye out for Marian's yard sale...)

The muffler seems to be unisex in the ad Lynne links to, or at least there are colors and styles that are more feminine/masculine... The top two on the right look like they would be suitable for a man, though not the one on the bottom.
