What is this Closed Small Carrying Case with "V" shaped Charm?

I purchased this not knowing what it was, but thought it was very unusual.

The person I bought it from said it had to do with Prince Matchabelli perfume. Well, I looked when I got home and the crown is totally different so I am fairly certain this has nothing to do with Prince Matchabelli anything.

I wondered if it was a stamp or seal of some sort -but you can't take this out of the case.

I wondered if it was a medal - a "V" made out of leaf decorations.

There are no names on this. There is a sponge like material for this chained "V" to sit in.

There is a crown on the outside of a raised design.

Any ideas at all what this might be?

You also can not close the case when the chained item is out of the case. There is no way to carry this or put this on a chain.

It seems pretty much a open up and look piece and put it away -that is why I was thinking a medal or some sort on honorary remembrance.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe it's a purse hook! You open it up, fit the (inverted) angle with the black sponges over the edge of a table, and put your purse strap over the hook. That way your purse doesn't need to go on the floor or clutter up the table. Unlike glove holders (another cool mid-century doohickey), they still make these, but the contemporary ones look very different, with a rigid hook vs a chain/hook, plus they're larger/heavier to handle today's more sizeable purse!

i'm not sure that it's a purse hook as if you imagine hooking that on the table it would mean the lid would be facing the wrong way and so would restrict the hook. i think its a military item as that is the Queen's crown, usually seen on military badges or buttons, but also the post office! the v shaped hook looks to be of laurel leaf type, so perhaps it is a type of presentation medal, and the chain secures it?

It's a very clever device--counterintuitive but it works! I've attached pictures of the one I have (believe it or not I just remembered I have the exact same one!) The second photo, of the back of the container, has instructions and an illustration of how to use it.

And here's a link to a contemporary one, which as you can see is much more substantial, to handle a more substantial purse:

well blow me down!! i was off looking for military stuff and stuff! i can see how it works now, i have got one of the hook ones but not seen one in a tin like this before, well as my mum said you learn something every day!! perhaps it was a commemorative coronation gift, with the queens crown on it? that would date it what, 53?

That's such a lovely thing. A friend bought me one of the modern ones and - while it was a very good idea on her part! - it's so bloody heavy I don't carry it around. And, err, a bit ugly. I *love* the vintage ones though. I wonder if this would date to around the time of QEII's Coronation (53)?
