What is this? Coin purse? Lip stick bag?

This belonged to my grandmother born in 1917. Found when cleaning out her house. It's not in the greatest condition but I am curious as to what it exactly is.
There's no markings except for the flower on the cap.

I have had several similar, metal mesh evening bags with a short chain strap. Any sign that a chain may have been removed?

That style of closure is called a “gate top”.

When you went out dancing, you'd take along just what you needed which, in those days, was a couple coins for the trolley, rouge, tissue, etc.
