a curio I couldn't leave behind at the last bric a brac...bound to come in use someday I thought! I don't have it on hand at the moment but it's quite short, maybe 30cm including the acorns, which are very chunky, maybe 2" long?

In Victorian times black acorn was symbolism of mourning. I can only think of a draw string of a mourning purse...or similar if that old.

Thank you both for your suggestions, I think the drawstring purse idea fits best.
I hadn't seen this acorn trim before on a garment until yesterday when I saw this magnificent cape where it is a rather ornate fringed decoration:

Is it assumed that all the black garments like this were mourning attire?

I think this is a common misconception. I have read that women then wore black just as we do today, for all sorts of reasons, including fashion and practicality. Also mourning garments were deliberately plain, not heavily embroidered and trimmed. However others will know better than me, it's definitely not my area of expertise!
