What is this Hat??

Hello everyone. Came across a couple of these hats the other day, and I thought they were too cool to pass up. They are tagged "Mr. Milton New York." I'm not really sure what to call them, or how old they might be. Can anyone help? Thanks!

That's an adorable hat! At first glance, I was a bit stumped on dating, as the cap portion looked somewhat 50s to me. But the more I look at it, the more I think it's 60s--the strap and button, and the metallic thread, are giving me a kind of "mod space age" feeling.

I agree with 60's, and I think it's almost a dressy driving cap, if you see what I mean, I can see someone wearing this on a scooter!

Hi,

This is one that is certainly unusual. I might do some research and come back to this. My initial reaction is more with Jonathan's dating, as I first saw very early 1950's. Clues for me are the the wool jersey, and the general shaping of it is different than the 60's space age helmets. It does look to be styled after a driving cap, but worn for evening as it is quite dressy in feel. I have come across Mr. Milton hats and they were, from my experience, all from the early to mid 1950s. The labels look circa very early 50s also. It could be late 40's, very sporty and European in influence. Cool hat!

How interesting! I just received the exact same hat but in dark brown. Has anyone found any information? This one was sold in Marshall Field & Co. I originally thought earlier than 50s, but the jersey fabric is throwing me off too.
