Hello, Can you please assist me with this hat?

I think it is probably circa 60s. I think it has gold metallic lame threading. I think the inside is lined in cotton with a netting over the cotton. If you can please confirm or correct me and I am not sure what type of hat it is. The only term that comes to mind would be a soufle hat but is there an actual term for this style?

Thank you kindly, Caryn

I don't know. Was there another hat shown that looked like this? Thanks, Caryn

I'd probably call it a toque, since it reminds me of a chef's hat.

Maggie, It does look like a chef's hat. That was my first thought. Thanks, Caryn

Anne, Thank you. I hope you check back because I would like you to know that I greatly appreciate you always offering your opinion. Even when you don't know what response to give you usually chime in to give your thoughts and let us know that help is on the way. ;)

Everyone has their great qualities on this site. Collectively you all make a wonderful group.

Thanks again, Caryn

How about some confirmation on dating and materials?

Thanks Pinky, Well I was not planning on really offering too many hats but apparently I am getting them so if the book is good it will be useful to me. I will have a look at it.

I already purchased a few books from members on this site but they do not really focus on hats.

Thanks, Caryn

I went and took a look. It seemed like a good book so I bought one.

Thanks again, Caryn

Hi,

Its falls into the category of a turban. There is a name for this type of turban, which was popular in the early 1940's as well. Perhaps it was called a telescope turban, I cannot recall from memory.

While some hats do not actually look like what we think of as turbans, they actually fall into that category. Calling it a toque is OK too, as many turbans and toques sort of cross over in their look. Call it what you think will appeal to buyers and go with either term.

The fabric is a metallic brocade, probably Lurex threads.

I suspect it may be squashed down in the front, from being stored incorrectly. I am not sure, but perhaps it was not supposed to look that way in front, not quite so smashed, but have a more stand up appearance. Is there a wire inside the crown?

Yes, I agree that is looks to date from the early 1960s.

Oh yes, Sue Langley's book is an excellent resource.

Hi Angela. I like this hat too. Thanks

Hi Barbara, No there is no metal ring inside. It is just the lining. between the hat and what would be the head. The hat looks lopsided like that because there is thread on one side holding it down. There is also threading holding it down in back.
Do you think the threading came out of the other side or that someone altered it? Should I sew the other side down the same way to see how it looks? I can always take the thread out of the other side and the back to after if it does not look right.

Thanks, Caryn
