What is this?!

A dress? A nightgown? I don't know! It's completely sheer & is made from a seersucker- like fabric w/ a 10" side metal Talon zipper. It also has loops for a belt (which is missing). It had a lovely silhouette, but I can't figure out how it would have been worn. I'm assuming with a slip? I wish I had a better vocabulary to describe it, but I'm a total newbie. I think it's a 40's piece, but I don't really know. Can anyone tell me what this is? Thanks so much!

It also has a tattered tag on the inside "Glen-Joan Fashions New York"

Yes, late 40s dress to be worn with a slip. I'm pretty sure that puckered fabric is nylon plissé. Lovely!

Thank you so much for your responses! "Nylon plisse"- that's awesome! I wanted to post a close up of the fabric, but couldn't firgure out were to add it on the "quick reply". So would this be considered an evening dress or special occasion? Would the slip be the same color? It fits me like a glove, so I'd like to wear it as it was intended.

I would go with a white slip to match. Make sure it is very close to the same length. I'm not sure what level of "fancy" to call it...but would consider it evening or dressy.

I think when it was first made that it was more of a summer afternoon dress than a dressy dress but now - it's definitely on the dressy side. I agree with wearing a white slip, as close to the same length as possible and very simple so that the slip doesn't distract from the dress.

Hope you will show us a photo of you wearing it when you've found the slip.

Love it!

I agree with Linn & Maggie to wear with a white slip close in length to the dress--you should be able to find a suitable vintage slip without a great deal of trouble....

And I think Linn is correct in that it would have been an afternoon dress--for tea or a ladies' garden luncheon, or an afternoon open house--but in our more casual times, would be more of a "dressy" dress. And yes, would love to see a photo of you in it when you find the right slip!

An afternoon dress- that makes sense! I was befuddled by this dress because the cut seemed so elegant- more dressy, but the fabric seemed a little bit more casual. Plus the sheerness. Now I am on the hunt for the perfect slip. I promise to post a picture of me wearing it! Thank you so much for all of the information!

This is from around 1949 or very early 1950's. Have a look at the many examples of dress patterns online from that period to see the shape and cut of similar styles.
