I feel like this is a bit of a dumb question, but I'm wondering if there is a name for this type of coat.

It is a 50s (as far as I can tell) possibly handmade coat, cotton exterior and silk or rayon lining.

I don't think it is a trench coat, correct? How would it be called?

I'm thinking maybe "overcoat" is the best descriptor?

Because of the fabric, it looks to me like a raincoat.

It looks like what we used to call a trench coat. They were waterproof or water resistant and often belted. This one is from some wonderful seller with the catchy name "Metro Retro Vintage!"

I wondered that but I'm not sure how waterproof the fabric would be. It's a kind of tight cotton weave.

Trench coat did occur to me, but I think as you mention trench coats are always belted? This one doesn't have a belt and doesn't look like it probably would have had one, afaict.

OK I see. Well maybe I will add the trench coat wording as that's how people may search for it.

To me a trench coat has many more details, eg epaulets,, storm flaps etc etc. It’s also usually double breasted and yes, belted. The term has has morphed but i think its origins are military. As in WW1 in the trenches

I wouldn’t call this a trench coat. Overcoat or rain coat works.
