Hello All!

I would love to know what era this coat is from and what kind of fur this may be? Thank you in advance.

Are there any other labels, please?

You can see the Fur Resource here - I suspect it might be a faux fur though, so if you can find an acrylic label (the other fabric looks like a cotton velvet or velveteen?) it will help. My guess on the available information is '60s.
Thank for posting the fur resource link. I believe the fabric is like a silk velvet. The label Montaldo's, was a furrier, here in Charlotte for many years.

The fabric reads as too robust for silk velvet - another look and I can see it's not cotton, but if Montaldo's is a good name it could be a silk and rayon mix? And of course, if they're a good furrier, it won't be acrylic.

Yes, I agree. It could possibly be a rayon/silk mix. I won't dare burn it to find out, though. But that seems like the only clear method at this point. I don't live around any "experts" so to speak. However, I have worked in busy New York City fabric store, in the silk department. I am heavily reliant on my past experiences right now :duh2:

True silk velvet is a rare material in the modern world (post '60s), and it feels soft and drapey to the touch, a bit like butter (or at least, it does to me!). When it's used for coats in the '20s and '30s it's generally backed onto something to make it more substantial but really it's more suited to dresses and skirts. It's wonderful.

Modern silk velvets are generally made with a rayon base - I think they're made in India these days - they're still called silk velvet, but they're not pure silk.

If you want help with fabrics, I generally recommend fabric shops as you can enjoy going around, guessing the fabric composition by look and feel, and then read the tag. A good quality fabric shop should have a range of velvets in different textiles so you can compare.

Have you seen the Fabric Resource? It really is quite wonderful - here's the entry for velvet.

I can add that the name "Montaldo's" was a department store chain as well, so you will find that label on other garments, even hats and blouses. I agree it looks like fox, (maybe the animal's winter coat) and a nice quality velvet, probably a rayon velvet, and it looks like a 1960s style.

Thank your for letting me know about this. I didn't realize Montaldo's was a chain department store. I figured that it was just exclusive to Charlotte, NC. That is nice to know.
