What kind of garment set is this and is it vintage?

This is an odd set. It's four pieces consist of a cape, a vest, and a pair of pants with belt. The pants are a shorter length. They have rib-knit cuffs and look to hit just below the knee. Metal zip on pants and cape with RUHR zipper and Made in Germany stamped on the back. The belt is reversible. This is definitely a women's set... there's no denying the bust shaping. Would this set have been worn for a particular activity? Is it vintage?

Thank you!
~Donna

Hi Donna,

It looks like a late '50s to mid '60s sporting ensemble: perhaps for hunting or winter golf? Does such a thing exist? The knickerbockers suggest something with a fair amount of walking or activity but it's built for warmth.

The zip may be older too, Made In Germany suggests pre WWII - I believe things usually say Made in West Germany after that. But of course zips stay around long after they were made.

I think it's a marvellous set.

I think based on the style of the jacket with the hidden zip, and the colors of the tweed that the set is newer than Post WWII. It looks '70's to me. This is just a hunch based on the materials and colors. I have seen many pieces of jewelry made after WWII that are marked Germany or Made in Germany so the Made in Germany on the zipper is not a good indicator of the date. Metal zippers are still used on some garments today. I don't think the set is as new as reunification but it could be.

Knickers were popular in the late 1970's, and there were a lot of 'unisex' garments from the late 1960's through the 1970's.
