what kind of undergarments with this dress?

Hello! I just restored this pretty 50s dress. It was covered with embellishments and ribbons and straps. It's looking much more beautiful now! It doesn't look like it ever had any boning to it - would you just wear like a long-line corset style strapless bra with something like this? I guess if you're chest is large enough it will just stay up? It stays up on the mannequin but I wouldn't want to wear it around without some kind of support? There are 2 hidden buttons.

Thank you!

Perhaps it had a built in bra that's been removed?

Yes, possibly? Very hard to tell as I was telling pastperfect. Any thoughts on how to get this sell-ready? I could sell as-is, but not sure it's entirely wearable? I have zero sewing skills, but some kind of built in bra would be good I would think. So, a separate long-line wouldn't work right?

A long line would be what was worn under it, but without something to either attach it to the dress or actual boning in the dress, the dress will just keep slipping down.

This may be why someone added straps.

So if I take it to be altered, I just need to ask them to put some boning in it? Sounds complicated. It's hard to know how much to spend on alterations depending on trying to figure out what the dress is worth. Thank you!

Actually, it's quite simple. They can add boning casings or tapes to the interior seam allowances and darts, then slide the boning in and finish the ends of the casings by hand. Depending on what kind of casing they use, it can be set in by hand or by machine. Also, Jo-Ann sells a covered polyboning that would work either way and comes with the boning already in the casing. If you can hand sew, you could do this yourself. I'd have them bone the side seams, front dart and center front seam, plus the side back if there is a seam or dart there. Not the center back zipper, though!

Thank you so much! Sounds doable! Very cool that there is already a covered boning!
