What reptile gave their hide to Saks Fifth via France?

Etsy knocked my listing off because I identified this inherited purse (per Google) as crocodile and they are endangered. I had first consulted a friend herpatologist who couldn't identify it. Further Google research suggests lizard, another endangered species, but eBay doesn't seem concerned.

Whether I can sell it online or not, what do discerning members of this forum think is the reptile who lives on as this handbag?

The grid looks too symmetrical to be from an actual reptile. It is leather? If it is definitely hide, there is a good chance it was pressed to resemble lizard. This doesn't look anything like the big reptiles, crocodile or alligator. It could also be fake. Is the lining leather or vinyl? Perfecting faux skins for purse/belt/bag use has been really common since the 60s. They don't last as long, but are just as commonly found as real leather.

Have a look at our Fur Resource - it's super interesting and very helpful to narrow down exactly what different animals skins and furs look like close up.

Looks like monitor lizard to me or a facsimile thereof, as Sadie suggested, although I see a lot of irregularities in the pattern, which you don't usually get on a boarded (impressed) leather.
