What should I call this fabric?

I am wondering if anyone has a good name for this fabric - I feel like I know what it is but it is escaping me. It reminds of fabrics that were around our house when I was a kid in the 70s - but much heavier as this is a winter coat. The design is raised and coat is very heavy and soft. I seem to remember my mom having some lighter version of this type of material at her sewing table.

Hopefully you can see the fabric well enough.

Also - anyone have any thoughts on a good description of pattern? It seems Native American inspired and also reminds me of a saddle blanket. Coat is made by Tregos Westwear so both of those feel right...

Thank you!!!!!!

I just rememberered where I have seen fabric like this - not at our house at all! It was at my grandparents house. They had an awful green couch made of something like this...that was in 1970s but couch was much older (like them!).

Weird how a memory can just wash over you like that...I was always forced to sleep on the couch bc I was the smallest.

I would call the fabric velour, and I would call the pattern an alternating woven stripe with chevrons, diamonds, circles, etc. Very, very '70's.

It looks like carpet!
For lack of an exact name I would call it a synthetic pile (or wool or acrylic if you know the fabric contents).

Hi,

I have seen this referred to as a carpet coat, as it mimics a rug's woven pile, and it is definitely a "pile" weave as said before. It is not a velour, as velour is a much shorter finer pile, I would call this more of a "plush" pile. I would call it a plush pile coat! I will try to remember exactly what it is called....it is a cool lookin' coat!

Barbara is right. Very similar to old time carpetbags too. Another keyword often used is tapestry.

Thanks to everyone for the good info and replies. All of you gave me plenty of ideas to formulate a good description. I really do appreciate!

Looks like a very dense, thick type of chenille, with short-cut pile. Not like a bedspread chenille. Agree it's not velour. Oh, so 70s; love it! The term might be "sculpted chenille," but I'm not really sure.

If I remember, we used to call them saddleblanket coats or jackets. And, yes, it looks like upholstery as well as carpeting!

Yep, we did call it chenille "in the day" (showing our ages, aren't we, LOL?)--but I did some checking before I posted, and it does appear that chenille is correct, though I couldn't determine for sure that "sculpted chenille" was accurate....

vintagebaubles, I can further show my age and mention how I looked at (and drooled over) such items as this chenille jacket in the Montgomery Wards catalogue. ha ha

Ha! Monkey Wards! I used to love shopping there. Although their clothing section was small, they had very nice clothing compared to many of the discount and outlet stores in town. Very cute junior-style apparel!

We lived far from town so catalogue was often it for back-to-school shopping when I was a kid.

Monkey Wards. ha ha!
