Hi,

Firstly I should say I don't know much about vintage fasion (other than that I prefer it to modern fasion) but I saw this dress in the photo below and would love to get something similar for my girlfriend.

Could anyone tell me what you would call the style of this dress and also the decade(ish)?

Hi James

Those are interesting photos! It looks like a promo for a murder mystery event, perhaps?

That's a great dress, love those peacock feathers, but I don't think it's true vintage. It has perhaps some similarity to 1930s evening wear, if you want to try and find a true vintage dress that is along the same lines.

In fact that photo is reminding me (perhaps deliberately) of the library scene in the film Atonement, set in the 1930s, in which Keira Knightley wore a bright green dress - no feathers though, and the guy wasn't a vicar.

Hi Ruth,

I'm not sure what the photo was for but they chap in both photos is my personal trainer! I'll have to ask him.

I did wonder if it was true vintage, it just reminded me dresses I'd seen from the 20s/30s. Do you have any recommendations on where I might be able to look for dresses similar to this (and 20s and 50s dresses aswell)?

Thanks,
James

Well VFG members have the best vintage and the best customer service!

You might want to look at the shop links and searches in our VFG member directory, and on our website front page we have VFG member searches for eBay, Etsy and Ruby Lane.

If you have want something very specific like this dress, you can create a post in our Most Wanted Board - we would probably need your girlfriend measurements, or at least an approximate size

You might also want to look through the fashion parades forum to get some ideas, in fact right there is a post about an Etsy treasury called 'Slinky Gowns' you could have a look at.

Hello,

I am pretty sure that dress is a costume piece, created for the photo shoot or possibly borrowed from a wardrobe dpt. or costume rental, etc.

It appears to be a body conscious torso of stretch satin or bias cut satin, with a mermaid style skirt that has hand sewn peacock tail feathers.

You might try asking at this website and see what she can recommend. Gowns with hand sewn peacock feathers have been featured at several media events and designer collections over the past year or so, and she might have some leads for you.
