Its a single button it has George Washington on the obverse

I agree it looks like either a replacement for a broken shank, or possibly it wasn't a button at all in the first place, from what I can see it is just a pressed metal plate, buttons with these raised designs tend to have a back piece to complete the dome shape, like military buttons do.

It looks like a piece of wire attached with lead solder. Do you have a clearer pic?
