I have this dressz which my first thought is 1980s, and I'm assuming it's a cocktail dress, I'd just like it to be confirmed.

Nothing wrong with some 1980's bling. Here's a photo I found of me on Facebook (that I didn't even know existed until recently!) wearing a similar vintage dress. I have quite a few of them, they do require a certain venue to wear to though, as they don't half draw some attention! They are a nice way to wear something very dressy that is not revealing though.

Love the label - "Royal Feelings!"

I'm going to put this one into the early to mid '90s because there don't seem to be any shoulder pads and the shoulder line isn't as wide as the '80s ones. Can you tell if it's been shortened? If the beading goes into the hem, it's been altered. I'm not sure that I'd call it a cocktail dress, which tend to be dark colours and plainer, more like a wedding gown or evening dress.

Nicole I think shoulder pads were removed from this dress - the shoulder line does appear to be wider than the hanger at least (I know, that depends what size hanger etc.). The hem also has a solid beaded border which matches the neckline and a short split at the back of the skirt, so I don't think it was shortened.
I'm also thinking about how the label uses the name rayon rather than more modern terms for the material. Rose does it have any care label symbols? (although this is likely to say dry clean only or hand wash, you never know) a tumble dry symbol would indicate a post 1985 dating.

Melanie - What a great photo of you in that pretty dress!

Rose, the dress is lovely and your friend is going to be very pleased with the gift. I would describe it a cocktail dress. It could certainly be worn it to a cocktail party or a dressy occassion - and it would make a lovely wedding dress. Cocktail dresses in the US are not always dark or plain! I think it is from the '80's also.

That dress looks stunning on you! The friend I gave this to is a drag queen, and it suits him much better than it suits me (He also pointed out that some of the beading looks like something inappropriate :P)

I've given it to my friend now, but I remember it have instructions for the dry cleaner, but it did say dry clean only.

I'm glad I was on the right track, and that I found it a good home, it'll go to much better use with my friend, rather than hanging up in my closet.
