Hello Everyone!!!!!
I'm new to the vintage purse area of collecting. #1 is vintage Marbles.
So I decided to start collecting Whiting & Davis purses.
I hope you all can help me out with them.
I have some pictures. Maybe date, value or anything cool I can tell people about.
Hope to make this place like home!!
So let's go. Here's the first one, this is going to sound silly, but it smells like silver coins.
I see a '3' and 'soldered mesh'; also Whiting & Davis Co. stamped on the inside.
It's very dirty, I'm scared to touch it. It's kind of heavy. Neat looking design.

hope these are not too big.

Okay, so let's go on to my next one. It's a Mesh Wallet. Never been used and still has the unused tags. There is a symbol on the inside of the change purse next to 'made in belgium'. Gold?

There is gold like under the black mesh, you can see it when it move's....

Well, I hope these are good pictures, I can take more if need.
Thanks for any help you can provide!!!

Hi, William. This is a lovely Whiting and Davis mesh purse which is silver plated and the smell you detected maybe brass. These bags, I believe, were silver plated brass. Some mesh bags were sterling, but are marked as such. If you look at the photo of the clasp, you can see where the silver plating is missing and the brass appears. Brass has a very distinctive smell, even when it's plated. The mesh wallet is lovely, too, especially in it's unused NOS state. Nice treasures.

Hi William, Both your purse and wallet are lovely. I found a similar purse in one of my catologs which I have shown in the first photo. It is not exactly the same but it is quite similar. It is silver plated and dates back to 1923 so I believe your mesh purse dates back to around the same time.
I then looked for similar wallets to yours which I believed right off the bat was much newer than your purse and I found the ad shown in the second photo. The ad is from 1958 and featured Whiting & Davis's new Black Diamond Black bead mesh undershot with gold tones. I am not sure how long Whiting & Davis was making Black Diamond Mesh but think your wallet is newer than when Black Diamond Mesh was first introduced.

Thanks for the quick reply Ladies. ;)
Okay, good stuff here!!! Got some good news, that spot on the clasp of the little purse; wiped right off with a tissue; no idea what it was. It's kind of dirty.
Would that one have a lining in it or did they come that way?
Caryn, really neat pages you showed. I see the wallet in that ad has a snap on it. Any ideas about that symbol in inside of the change purse?
Now, a local store has a big purse, Whiting and Davis. It has a snap with the company name around it. The lining has the company name all over it. Its Black and Gold, like a big square tilted. It's in really really nice shape. The mesh is like little square, really soft. I think they want 55.00 for it. I think it's older, but not sure. Should I get it? I didn't see anything like it at the company website. Do they have a catalog somewhere? I would like to collect these, but sticking with older one's.
Thanks!!

Hi William, I don't think your purse was ever lined.
The wallet itself was made in the USA. The stamp that says Made in Belgium indicates that the frame of the change purse was made in Belgium.
As for the big purse at the store, I am not sure if you should get it. I haven't seen it and an item might be worth more to one person than another. Whiting & Davis does have a company website. If you google the name you should be able to find it.

Hi. Great info!!!!
Well, I found one that I was thinking about buying at the antique store. This one is on ebay and it is very very close to what I seen.

I think the one at the antique store has a silver square thing on the front.
So is this worth the 55 bucks??? Look old?
Thanks again for any help!!!
William

Oh, btw. The tiny purse I posted in the opening post. I just realized that the little square part on the strap moves up and down... LOL. Pretty cool.
