Who knows Gwenn Pennington??

Wondering if anyone can help with this.... I'm listing the Gwenn Pennington hat below, and I've had several Penningtons in the past. But I've never had any luck in finding out much, if anything, about the maker. And, boy, have I tried! To date, all the Pennington hats I've had have been 60s and 70s, and always of very high quality. This one is a Bollman Doeskin felt body--very nice!

Would love any info anyone might have! Thanks!

Yes, I'm listing it as a 1970s' hat, but I sure wish I could find out something about the maker.... None of the listings I see online for GP hats seem to have anything about the label--so I guess others must have a hard time finding anything out, too!

I have hats from her from the 1950s to maybe the early 1970s. I think her hey-day was the late 1950s to early-mid 1960s. I cannot tell you too much about her personally, just because I never got around to doing any research on her as yet. But I can say I have always been impressed with her earlier work, and find that her hats up till the mid 60s were always made of very good quality materials, with lots of hand detailing and excellent workmanship. Her label was considered on par with Mr. John, Dache' and other contemporaries. I find her hats to be nicer than most of Mr. John's work. She often copied styles from Paris and even did lines of hip, cutting edge, space age style hats. She could often be very trendy, as well as doing styles for the more conservative woman. Her hats in the 1960s were pricey and sold at the best stores.

I personally think the label is a mark of quality, that is about all I know just from handling about 100 or more hats with her label over the years. However the quality of her label hats declined after the 1960's, as it did with the majority of hat makers, even the very top of the line hats from the best milliners could not match their earlier work. Lots of reasons for that, but that is another topic.

I would also date your lovely hat to the 1970s.

Thank you! Even this hat is of very nice quality--probably not up to par with hats from the heyday of hat making, but nicer than the ones I wore during the 70s! LOL....And I agree with you about her stuff being of nicer quality than Mr. John's. All the hats I've had with her label always have some little, or big, detailed accent or design element that keeps them from being run of the mill or from looking like everybody else's hat. Like this has the feather "broomstick," which is definitely handmade/handstitched.

So, based on both Chris's and your experience, it sounds as if she was an active designer from the 50s through at least the mid 70s, I'd guess. Most of hers that I've had have dated to the latter part of that time, but I see a lot of her hats online that are from about the mid 60s.

And she was a real person? The only thing I think I can remember finding out about her is reading her obituary--at least, what sounded like it was her obit. But I'm not even sure about that, and don't trust my memory!

I have always wondered the same, Anne.
Was she real or was it a made up label.

Your post made think of this cute miniature hatbox. It is only 8" round. Whimsy hat?

Or is it a wig box? The side says 16. A color?
It came to me with two hair pieces inside, but no Gwenn labels though.

Cute box, Suzanne! Seems too small for a hat box unless, as you say, for a whimsy or maybe a headband hat? I wonder if she was based in the Northeast, because we seem to find a lot of her hats around here....

Some of the info I found had hat labels starting from the 50's-late 60s.
Then I found articles & newspaper ads from the 70's saying...."meet the famous wig and hair stylist, "Gwenn Pennington".--she was making appearances in MA and PA in the early 70's.
It has to be the same person--the name is spelled the same and the font on the hat boxes is the same font on the wig boxes.
