Who was Bickler?! And thoughts about the date of this fab coat???

Fallen in love with this fab lime green lilac and cream coat. Metal buttons with a vaguely Celtic design and the most gorgeous internal breast pocket design with pleated edge which I’ve never seen before!

I’d love to know - does anyone know anything about Bickler?

And thoughts about likely age (I can’t remember when Woolmark trademark came in!)

Finally, is this pattern houndstooth?

many thanks

Jane

I can see why you love it! The Woolmark was first used in 1964:

I did a very very quick search for Bickler Made in England label and found a 1960s coat for sale that looks nothing like yours and a 1960s shift dress both hae the same label as your coat.

To my eye, your coat looks C. 1960s but it's pretty long for mid-late 60s and at the earliest it's from 1964.

The Bickler company were owned by brothers Jack & Stanley Bickley. I worked for them when I left school, and needed a job while I decided on a career, They were based in Colliers Wood, south London, near Wimbledon. I was only 18/19, but my boss made me responsible for distributing stock around the country so that each branch received the items that sold well in each particular place, from Eastbourne to Glasgow, and many places on the way. We had 'shops within shops', i.e. they could be found in branches of Debenhams, and other department stores. We were sold to Debenhams in about 1975, and later they closed us down, we were all laid off, and I found work in health and social care, which is where I have stayed. It was an interesting year or so that I spent there. Hope that helps.

Thanks for sharing John. What years did you work for them? Do you know when the company started?
